The Era of Greatness

While it is ultimately your decision to manifest your greatness, I would like to make a plea that you do so. The world desperately needs your greatness, and it needs it now.

As you know, the world has reached a real state of crisis. You are needed to help guide humanity to a better place, a place of increased health, happiness, and peace. Through your greatness, other people can also find their own greatness.

Just like an individual human being who is not living up to his or her potential, all of humanity is caught in certain destructive patterns of behavior that keep us locked in a perpetually imbalanced state. Some might say that this is the result of unchangeable aspects of human nature, but I disagree. This is a very pessimistic view of humanity that keeps us trapped where we are. Instead, I believe that human beings possess a natural desire and capacity for goodness.

In his book Born to Be Good: The Science of a Meaningful Life, psychology professor Dacher Keltner shows how our brains are intended for positive, meaningful interaction with other people. People who have a definite sense of purpose and a positive outlook on life have healthier brains. Brains thrive, he writes, when people have healthy relationships and a sense of contributing something of value to the world.

Even if you feel a little pessimistic about the current state of humanity, take a few moments to consider the people in your life. Would you say that the majority are doing the best they can to contribute positively in the world? It may be true that many are not living up to their full potential, but I bet that most want to do good in this world. Only a small minority of people are completely given over to the darkest aspects of human behavior. Most people genuinely want to contribute positively to the world, and it is only unfortunate habits based on fears about themselves and others that perpetuate people’s negative behaviors.

For me, recovering our humanity is a matter of rediscovering our basic goodness. I call this the hong-ik spirit. In Korea, we use the phrase hong-ik to refer to a certain way of relating to the world that allows people to get beyond the individual worries and petty concerns of the individual self to consider the wider ramifications of our habitual actions. In Korean hong-ik means “wide benefit,” referring to the ideal state of looking beyond individual desires to the collective needs of all humanity. Thousands of years ago, Korean culture used this hong-ik notion as the main foundation of its cultural identity. I think that other cultures also built their notions of civility on similar ideas, but somehow preference for individual happiness at the expense of the whole is more the norm these days, leading to the environmental and social injustices that we see all around us.

This is why your greatness is so important, now more than ever. True greatness is a matter of bringing
